Korean Healthcare | A Mirror of America
Since 1989 the South Korea has undergone massive investment in its health care infrastructure resulting in the creation of a modern advanced network of hospitals and clinics staffed by highly trained physicians and nurses. According to the World Health Organization, the results of this initiative have raised life expectancy rates and health care availability to the same standards as the United States. The South Korea has a large health care network consisting of:
- 850 Hospitals
- 19,000 Clinics
- 70,000 physicians
- 180,000 registered nurses
With significant numbers of Korean healthcare professionals educated in the United States, the Korean health care system has evolved to be on par with the quality of care provided in the United States in terms of technology, skilled professionals, and medical practices.
Korea maintains more than 100 nursing schools to train and educate Registered Nurses and students wishing to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Each year more than 10,000 new nurses graduate from these institutions. Every nursing institution in Korea has an affiliation with a nursing college in the United States and nearly every professor has received an advanced degree from an American institution.
With the heavy American influence on Korean nursing education, a recent study by the University of Iowa found that decision-making for interventional choices among Korean and American nurses were virtually the same. This means that Korean nurses are uniquely qualified to work in American health care environments and will require little additional training beyond the typical new hire orientation and training programs.
Korean hospitals use many of the same technologies as are found in the United States. In fact, over 50% of medical devices are imported from the Untied States or Japan. Additionally, many products by General Electric, Siemens and Hitachi are produced under license by Korean firms for use in domestic health care facilities.
Korean healthcare is conducted mostly in English. In addition, every educated professional in Korea has the ability to speak, read, and write English at a high level of proficiency. The Korean government has mandated that all signs and official documents be produced in both Korean and English. Koreans are exposed to English at the elementary school level, and by the time professional education is completed, their English skills are generally superb.
